Eau de Space
Now that this Kickstarter project has taken the World's attention, I just want to share what I understood from my early level of inquiry so far:
1. The smell of space is mostly coming from the scent of dying stars, and scientists compare it to hot metal, diesel fumes, and barbecue. These smelly compounds are called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
2. Since trying to smell the outer space directly is IMPOSSIBLE for us humans because it could kill us, Astronauts could only refer to the residual smell emanating from their suits after a space walk. Inside the ISS, the smell reminded them of a home-cooked meal.
3. This "Eau de Space" scent will be a recreation of NASA's original simulation scent for Astronauts in-training, formulated by the fragrance maker Steven Pearce of Omega Ingredients.
4. The expected final scent pyramid will be "burned" or "fried" steak, metallic, raspberries, and rum.
5. If this project proves to be commercially successful, I expect the next scent "Eau de Lune" to be requested soon. It is also coming from NASA laboratory trying to simulate the scent of moon by the same fragrance maker. And it will smell like a spent gunpowder, just like the smell of New Year's eve festivities in the 90's when fireworks are so popular and heavily-used.
